Many of us want to grow a buzzing online audience (movement) so we make an impact, change the world and make money too.
I've already discussed how you don't need a massive audience to have these things. If you run workshops, for example, you might need to sell 6 tickets a month, for example. Six people.
Whether you want to go big, sell thousands of books and courses or just have a fun side-business online, knowing how to resonate and grow a community with writing is valuable.
Here are some things that were pivotal in my personal brand growth online:
Learned to be OK with being a bit shit.
If you're trying to come across as credible and great and not shit, you'll never do anything.
It took me many articles to realise I wasn't always that great. Some days, I'd write something I hated, but I overcame the urge to hide it in my computer folders.
Sure, if I was consistently putting out crap, then I knew it was a logistical issue causing me to rush my work for example, so I'd make time for the article that it deserved.
But generally, we can be harsh on ourselves and never do anything because we can't stand the idea of being incompetent.
My greatest lesson in this was having the balls to be a bit shit and publish anyway.
