9 tips that ensure you stay motivated to create consistently
I'm not always motivated and often just want to sit in a dark room and sulk.
But I've learned a ton over 15 years of near-daily writing that help me get into the zone and just create.
Here are 9 tips that ensure you stay motivated to create consistently:
The most prolific creators rarely feel motivated before they start.
They start, regardless of how they feel, and work themselves into being motivated.
Stop thinking you need to know everything in advance before starting.
You need to be OK with not knowing and create anyway.
Focus on both quality and quantity.
If we focus too much on either one, we end up either publishing a lot of junk or becoming too perfectionist and never publishing.
The most successful creators put out a LOT of stuff they knew wasn't perfect.
Focus on the tiniest steps, not the mountain.
Make things easier for yourself by breaking down your goals into simple steps. You can't fail this way.
You must be biased to finish what you start.
Don't allow pieces to sit unfinished. Publish.
It gives you confidence and makes you 10X more productive.
Focus on solving problems.
There is always a problem you can solve that others are interested to hear about.
What are your peeves or problems?
Go there.
Ask others about their problems too. Attention will always congregate around solutions to real problems.
Be ruthless with distractions.
Get Internet-blocking apps, and get off social media when it's time to do deep, focused work.
This is how you gain an unfair advantage over the distracted masses.
Get aggressive.
Aggression isn't only for destructive purposes.
Aggression forces you to let go of your complaints and gripes. It infuses your blood with energy like a dragon breathes fire.
Use your dissatisfaction to move with a sense of urgency. Be OK with leaning into things that feel uncomfortable or a little frightening.
Here's where you get that edge.
