The cool thing about consistently writing online for over a decade is developing a feel for good writing not everyone can explain.

I see many make mistakes they blissfully don’t notice, but they set off my Batman tingles.

It’s like watching a new driver forget to check the side mirror before setting off.

All of the following little mistakes I’ve made hundreds of times.

If I rush or am unconscious, I still make these mistakes.

Minor edits can lead to notable results.

Many writers do not understand this until they write a lot.

Here they are:

You’re trying to reach everyone.

This is like the writer’s version of people-pleasing.

Stop it!

You are here to be polarising. You must push certain types of people away so that you give room for those who absolutely love you.

Be willing to offend or be met with disagreement. This. is. a. good. thing.

First draft is too tidy.

If you’re putting down words while in painstaking editing mode, it’s like going out for a jog in your mum’s best stilettos.

Your greatest mistake is to avoid mistakes. Be messy. Get all that crap out of your head and on to the page first.

Put on your trendy editing cap later.
