Eight ways to inject more FUN into your writing
(so you don’t sound like every other GPT Normie)
In this AI-writing age, where everyone now sounds identical, there’s never been a better time to enjoy actually writing things.
To infuse colour and human expression into it. To tell funny stories. To bleed on the page. To be entertaining and to entertain yourSELF when you write.
The writers who stand out and grow faster than most are having fun.
Here’s how to join them:
1. Write like you’re texting your weirdest, most unhinged friend.
Think of that chum you can’t wait to share some funny news with. You know how fun it is to write to them and be a little goofy when you do.
You chuckle to yourself often.
Make that your reader.
Write how you’d explain something to someone who already thinks you’re a bit odd and loves you for it anyway. Your guard is down, and this is what your best readers really crave.
Not more bloody pure-AI slop.
2. Actually write about that thing that’s been secretly bothering you.
Like actually actually write about it. You know what it is. What’s your personal solution?
WARNING:
Getting this out there means dealing with the very real possibility that people will dislike you for it.
You can write boring crap that displease no one, and fade into obscurity…
Or write stuff that loses you followers, and gains a loyal tribe.
Your choice.
3. Channel a specific character for each piece you write.
Some days you’re a grumpy wizard dispensing harsh truths.
Other days, you’re a caffeinated human squirrel with grand opinions.
Next week, you’re a jaded bartender who’s seen it all.
Step into their shoes.
PLAY. Experiment. You’re not some grey sod with an accounting side-hustle.
Be different people and stop boring yourself to tears. Break patterns.
Surprise yourself.
4. Use words that make you giggle like a twelve-year-old.
Plop. Squelch. Cheeky. Butthead. Shenanigans.
Some words are just fun to use.
They have texture, bounce, and a cheeky bit of pizazz.
When you use words and phrases that make you laugh, you’ll wonder why you ever thought writing was dull in the first place.
Don’t be a butthead. Find the funny words.
5. Write about something interesting, funny or quirky that happened to you recently.
Stories are one thing. But sharing anecdotes or stories from the last few days adds a sense of freshness, recency, vivacity, and fun that my readers love.
When you regularly share recent stories, you’re forced to be more present in your everyday life, too.
You take note of little funny things, like the terrible art your barista made on your flat white. You engage more with life, so you engage more in your writing.
This kind of thing is not only fun but also helps grow your brand with the right people faster than any GPT could.
6. Regularly break the rules and do what most do not.
Take a good, hard look at how most people are writing these days. Take note ESPECIALLY of the ones who don’t make you feel much.
They are helpful because they give you a sense of how to break the pattern.
If everyone’s writing short sentences, write some long paragraphs.
If everyone’s using AI slop, be the guy who’s just puking thoughts onto a screen.
Break a grammar rule sometimes.
Write loose and conversationally.
Write about stuff in more creative ways.
7. Write faster and stop editing.
If you’re stalling too much and progressing at a snail’s pace, this is often a sign you’re in critical-thinking mode.
You’re trying to edit every damn word as you spit it out. Stop that. Leave that for later.
Just get your thoughts out on the page.
Like a backed-up drain, you often need to blast things out to get things flowing and to access the juiciest ideas at the back of your mind.
Prioritise fast writing, not perfect writing. Once your own slop is on the page, you filter and edit.
That’s where you find shiny gold.
8. Write your next piece like you’re giving yourself a magnificent pep-talk.
Forget all that stuff about ‘writing for your target reader’ for now.
Just write something that addresses a deep need you have.
Write like you’re giving yourself a motivational, funny (or dead serious) pep talk on a challenge that’s currently on your mind.
Write like you just knocked back three flasks of coffee, burned your inner victim, and activated your inner dragon warrior, dispensing badass knowledge to get your bitch-self out of a slump.
Use AI if you need.
Just don’t delete your personality because you outsourced your voice to a bloody machine.
Remember, writing is not just about dispensing information.
It’s about emotionally connecting with a reader.
And you can’t do this if you can’t find a way to have fun writing it.
