We live in a time of ludicrous opportunity. The little guy can do things the big guys were doing ten years ago.
But the enemy is distraction and wanting to do it all.
You can do this with a vision and a healthy sprinkling of focus.
You can be your own solo money-making media company — and have lots of fun doing it.
Here are some ideas to give you a better sense of what I'm building here:
First of all, know that this is possible.
It's something you can create in a relatively short time. I've been taking a while, but I made many mistakes and you can learn from me.
Creating your own audience and productise your personality or knowledge is possible.
Many one-person brands are even out-competing mainstream media platforms as individuals in terms of the views they get. But you don't need close to big numbers to make money and impact.
I've been working on this for years.
My primary platform is newsletters. I have two and am planning a third for fiction.
I see it as an asset that accumulates in value the more time and energy I put into it.
The asset's value is represented by how much attention each can gather.
It takes time, consistency, and disappointment, but the needle will move, and often quicker than you expect.
I am in the attention-grabbing business.
I do this by predominantly writing and sharing content across the web. I share posts on places like Twitter, Linkedin, and Medium.
I often re-share and repurpose older material to give my content more surface area to attract more attention.
I run my newsletters through Substack, which is itself a way to gather subscribers because it serves as a way for new people to find new writers like us.
With subscribers and followers in place, I have attention, which can be transferred into income that supports me in continuing to share my ideas and entertainment.
How I make money and plan to make more.
Small courses, live workshops, cohorts, sponsorships, consulting, and books.
I also use books to bring people over to my newsletters.
Over time, I grow through continued content creation and sharing, tweaking and building on what has been proven to work.
I also share podcasts on Mondays and occasional videos.
This doesn't need to be a writing-only endeavour.
As this business relies on intellectual energy, I do everything possible to promote my energy and creativity.
If I struggle to be productive, I go for a walk or welcome in the discomfort and write anyway.
My system takes precedence over my feelings.
And so the process continues.
This is a system and must be viewed as a system. You need to take personality out of it and be in this for the long-term game.
This is a game of stringing hundreds and thousands of pieces of content together and converting attention into happy buyers (if you want to make money from this).
It's also a game of continual learning, renewal and revitalising one's own creative enthusiasm.
Those who go far manage their energy well.

Yeah, it's all about having a good system. That's what I'm working on right now. I wonder if I should even be posting my fiction on Substack, or if I should concentrate on newsletters and talk about the fiction I'm working on while posting excerpts and snippets, videos and audio elsewhere. Just reposting everything everywhere seems like it's not getting me anywhere.
This is an amazing read ! 😁
