Read this if you struggle to find the enthusiasm to create every day
Last year I made the public commitment to record and share a daily video on my YouTube channel.
That's a big commitment and made me question my sanity.
What was I thinking?
I sat down on a park bench in Poland to settle myself in to record another point-and-shoot talking video.
All morning I'd been thinking of excuses to make to my subscribers so I didn't have to do it.
It all seemed so pointless.
I wasn't excited at all.
I had already made over 360 videos. Why more?
What else could I possibly talk about that would bring value to people?
That's when an idea struck me.
I'd talk about how I encourage myself when I can't be bothered to make content.
Yes, I know. It's a bit meta. But here we are.
Knowing this one thing always re-energises me and helps me put out new stuff that I otherwise may have avoided sharing.
Ready for that one thing?
It’s this:
Stop focusing on YOU and your feelings and focus on your system.
That's it.
So many of us wind ourselves up like a tin toy truck because we think we need to feel good to create.
We think we need the confidence, or to be in the right mood.
Gurus tell us all we need is to 'believe in ourselves.'
Uh, how about no?
That just makes us want to quit if we don't feel that supposed 'self-belief.'
But we'll rarely feel good before starting.
You need to get back to your system.
What is your system?
Daily videos?
Daily articles?
A weekly podcast?
Daily reps?
Make it about the quantity first, not the quality.
It's about the mechanics of it.
You don't need to become more human right now. You need to become a dirty, mean robot right now.
You're nervous about creating because your criteria for creating is to produce something fantastic.
That's hard. That's high freaking pressure.
Forget creating a work of brilliance for now.
All you need to do is share one more piece.
That's your success.
Accumulating one more dot on your consistency matrix.
One more piece.
And the more you add, the higher the quality will be because you're putting in the most vital ingredient of all: experience.
When we focus on simply doing the next thing, no matter how devoid of emotion and how robotic this seems, there's no longer anything blocking us.
It's about the number.
And it's the number which leads to the passion you're looking for.
You win when you write, record, complete, and share - no matter what utter trash you've decided to put out today.
This is how to find enthusiasm for your craft each and every time.
When you win, you feel better, your work improves, and your people win too.
Much love,
Alex.
