Seven rules I follow as a writer to ensure my audience and business continue to grow

I’ve been writing content and sharing it online for over fifteen years.

In that time, I developed personal rules that emerged through writing and sharing consistently. I adopted and began to crystallise a set of rules based on the successes (and failures) I was seeing.

When something worked repeatedly, I used this data to inform a rule that now serves me.

Sticking to these rules has helped me build a readership of over 170,000 and make a living from my writing.

As a note, I don’t always follow these rules to a tee. Yes, I sometimes skip writing days.

But what’s key is these rules are there; I can see them daily, and they give me direction. It’s like a backbone for my business.

Here are the rules:

1. I must write something daily.

One thing I’ve learned over years of creating content is that writing is fuel, like logs to a roaring fire.

If I don’t write, I have no material that burns and spreads.

If I have no material to commit to paper, I have nothing I can use as a beacon for new attention and fresh eyeballs that arrive at my online real estate.

Writing is input for your machine, which is the vehicle you need to go places. With no writing, I have nothing to publish that spreads my message and drives my business.

When I don’t write, I also flag creatively.

The more I write, the more I can write.
