I come across many guys hell-bent on growing tons and tons of followers and subscribers.
They see the big dogs accumulating silly numbers of daily followers, and they suffer, like I have, from Comparisonitis.
It’s a pang in the chest.
I always say more is better. There are few limits on the Internet and many methods, tools and platforms we can use to boost our audience.
And the more you can get, the better. Great.
But you don’t need to prioritise a large audience.
It’s taken a lot of personal obsession, rushing and frustration to know the value of stepping back occasionally.
Take a breath.
Ask yourself what it is you want in the next year.
Do you really need lots of followers, or might your mission be achieved by reaching a specific type of person?
Perhaps we can narrow it down super tight.
Maybe you want to gather a group of seven people together each week for a workshop.
Maybe your purpose would benefit from the leverage gained by being introduced to two well-connected people each month.
Perhaps you’re looking to create three one-to-one consulting clients each month.
Does all that require a vast audience?
Not really. Consistently bringing in new eyeballs and more attention, yes.
And that’s all possible with the tools we have and the ideas you have swirling in your head.
I’m not saying going big isn’t good. If you can build a significant following, you can make a big impact. But you can make a big impact with a smaller circle too.
Don’t let your panic or frustration get in the way of honouring your commitment to create regularly, using your intuition and awareness, and having fun.
If building a massive audience doesn’t seem feasible right now, perhaps that’s a good thing.
It could be a sign that you need to tighten up your focus and re-assess what kinds of results you could be creating with your ingenuity and enthusiasm right now.
You don’t need a big audience.
Maybe all you need is a tight-knit circle.
